Extent of marine litter originating from aquaculture

Updated:7/28/2022

SINTEF notes that somewhere between 16,000 and 29,000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated from sea-based Norwegian facilities each year. It is unclear how much of this ends up as litter. Clean-up data shows that pipe remnants, netpen parts and even rope originate from the industry, but there is no data to distinguish between different marine industries for certain types of waste. As it stands, no data analyses have been conducted to provide reliable estimates of the extent of marine litter originating from the aquaculture industry.
