Causes of marine litter from fishing and fisheries

Updated:9/21/2023

Loss of tools is the main cause of litter originating from fishing and fisheries and happens during active fishing due to tools becoming caught, currents and weather conditions. Wear and tear of tools and cut-offs from work on board are also among the major causes of plastic going astray from fishing and fisheries, which happens as a result of bad weather conditions, time pressure and also due to poor on-board procedures for waste management. Waste management is time-consuming and costly and the waste management at fishing ports does not adequately meet the needs of fisheries. The dumping and burning of waste unfortunately also takes place in Norwegian waters. Attitudes are also an important cause of waste going astray and both knowledge and attitudes need to change.
