Practical tips

Updated:8/30/2023

Many beach cleaners have identified good solutions to the challenges we face during clean-up activities. Here you can find a few great tips to simplify the work.

Please do send us an e-mail if you have any tips that could be useful for others.

Handling of waste oil

Waste oil must be handled carefully to avoid spillage. This can be handled as follows:

1. 1. If you find a jug of waste oil, you can secure it by putting it in a waste bag.

2. Then carefully lift the plastic jug into a separate barrel marked "waste oil". You should always bring a barrel like this when carrying out a clean-up.

3. When you return to the collection point for waste, the waste oil should be transferred over to an IBC container. An IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) is a medium-sized, reusable container used to store and transport liquids, semi-solids, pastes or solids.

4. Deliver the waste to an approved waste reception. Keep the bags on.

Bundling of trawl balls

We find several trawl balls along the coast and we frequently find storage areas where people have bagged them up. This is impractical, as the bag quickly becomes packed and heavy. Trawl balls, rings and buoys can be threaded on rope to create manageable bundles. This makes them easier to transport and easier to sort for any reuse.

Hooks for removing ropes and nets

Ropes and nets that have become entangled due to overgrown vegetation can be difficult to remove. A hook like this one can help you get hold of overgrown ropes and nets.

Storage and transport of glass

Broken glass poses a risk of cuts and of waste bags breaking. A plastic jug can be used to store and transport glass in order to avoid this.

Carrying heavy bags of litter can be hard on the hands and fingers. By tying the garbage bags to an old broom handle, it can be easier to carry the bags with you.

Fine meshed hoof

It can be challenging to collect plastic waste lying in small ponds or in water. A long and finely meshed hoof can be a useful aid.
